Ford Capri (1972)
The Ford Capri is broadly seen as the first European “personal car” that purchasers could order to their own individual engine and equipment specifications. The practice that began in the Ford Capri with its wide range of engine and equipment options has long since become the norm.
The Capri debuted in England and Germany at the same time in 1969, with six engine options available with four or six cylinders delivering 50 to 108 bhp. The Capri 2600 GT with 125 bhp and Capri RS 2600 for motor racing with a 150 bhp and fuel injection joined the range in 1970. The Capri II replaced the original Capri in 1974. More than three-quarters of a million Capris – 784,000 to be exact – were built in Germany between 1969 and 1973. The model on show at the ZeitHaus museum is equipped with a V4 engine with a displacement of 1,288 cc delivering 37 kW or 50 bhp for a top speed of 133 km/h. The car was available new at an ex-showroom price of 8,385 DM.
