Classic of the month
Volkswagen Corrado G60
The spotlight’s on the Volkswagen Corrado G60. This was the first Volkswagen to come with a supercharged engine and the first mid-range sports car with an automatic rear spoiler.
Launched in 1988, G60 was built on second-generation Volkswagen Golf running gear. Equipped with an injection engine and mechanical spiral charger with intercooling, the G60 was initially produced at Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg before relocating production to Karmann, Osnabrück. The year 1991 saw the G60 range extended to include a two-litre naturally aspirated version with a four-valve cylinder head delivering 136 bhp, and a VR6 version at 190 bhp with optional four-speed automatic transmission.
A total of 97,535 Corrado G60s were built between 1988 and 1995. Compact high-performance mid-range cars still form an integral part of Volkswagen’s model range to this day.
You’ll find our 1991 Corrado G60 on display as our classic of the month for December 2024 on the green highlight area on the upper floor of the ZeitHaus museum. The 1,781 cc inline-four engine delivering 118 kW/160 bhp at 5,600 rpm can propel this model to a top speed of 225 km/h. The car was available new at an ex-showroom price of 42,500 DM.
