The Autostadt is the world’s largest new car delivery centre and home to the multi-brand ZeitHaus car museum. It is renowned for its diversity of exhibits – over 60 different brands representing the world of the automobile are housed here. Trailblazers of their time, they set the standard as far as technology, design, production methods and concept were concerned and became the models for other manufacturers. Displayed in their glass cases, more than 50 of these automobile milestones are to be seen in the ZeitHaus’s rack. They provide an overview of the most important eras in the development of the car. The exhibition alternates its exhibits regularly because the vehicles are often used to participate in classic rallies or excursions.
The Corpus elaborates on aspects of the rack’s milestone exhibition. The Design ICONS, displayed on pedestals, take the visitor on a journey through the history of automobile design – from its earliest incarnations, still reminiscent of the horse-drawn carriage, to the streamlined developments of the nineties; and from the influences of Art Nouveau to the effects of the unibody.
Against Peter Kogler’s backdrop mural which runs throughout the entire exhibition space, each respective automotive development is illustrated by historic images set into the vehicle’s pedestals. In this way the milestones of automobile design are elevated to artworks of technical design.
Bringing together contemporary art and classic automobility in a space defined by the quality of its design, the resultant space promotes a new look at a remarkable collection of automobile milestones. In this way the ZeitHaus museum tells the story of the 125 years of automobility while, at the same time, chronicling the development of an exclusive product for the few to a necessity for many.
