VolkswageN EA 128 variant (Prototype)

This year marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Volkswagen EA 128 Variant estate prototype from 1965. Volkswagen developed two vehicle versions for the US market in the early 1960s; these vehicles were aimed at rounding off the model range at the premium end – a saloon and an estate, both with six seats and a six-cylinder air-cooled boxer motor in the rear. Neither model left the prototype phase despite their decent performance and roomy interiors.

A car with clever design details

The Volkswagen EA 128 Variant estate featured thoughtful details that would still be attractive in today’s world, such as a flat boot floor that extended with the rear seat backrest folded down. The prototype built in 1965 was powered by a 1,798 cc six-cylinder boxer motor delivering 63 kW (85 BHP) for a top speed of 160 km/h. This prototype was never launched onto the market and did not have a showroom price.
