VolkswageN EA 160 (Prototype)

The Volkswagen Type 3 prototype EA 160 is celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2025. This was Volkswagen’s first step towards entering the mid-range auto market, leading to a range of new models. The prototype on show at the ZeitHaus museum never went into series production.

From 1968 onwards, the Volkswagen Type 3 took a pioneering role in automotive technology as the first series-produced VW with optional Bosch electronic fuel injection.

Saloon, cabriolet, and coupé versions available from 1961

The first Volkswagen Type 3 debuted as a saloon, the Cabrio as a versatile convertible, and as a coupé in 1961. Production of the Variant estate version began a year later, whereas the coupé was discontinued. A new model – the 54 BHP 1500 S – was launched soon afterwards in 1963.

In total, 2,584,904 Type 3 Volkswagens in all versions were produced between 1961 and 1973. The 1960 prototype showcased at the ZeitHaus museum is powered by a 1,493 cc four-cylinder boxer motor delivering 33 kW (45 BHP) for a top speed of 125 km/h. The Volkswagen Type 3 was available new at an ex-showroom price of 9,455 DM.
