Classic of the month

VW-Porsche 914/6

The VW-Porsche 914/6 jointly developed by Volkswagen and Porsche and built in 1970 represents a unique legacy project in our classic car collection. Together with the 914, the /6 was the world’s first mid-engined sports car to achieve production numbers in six figures, while also serving as a sign of things to come with the Porsche Boxster. You could also call it the first step towards an independent Porsche that was more affordable than the 911. The 914/6 was considered exemplary for clarity, spaciousness, and passive safety. One of its design features was the distinctly long wheelbase compared to the length of the vehicle.

Karmann bodywork, Volkswagen engines, Porsche assembly

Porsche sourced the 914/6 model’s bodywork from Karmann in Osnabrück and its engines from Volkswagen before final assembly at the Porsche plant in Stuttgart Zuffenhausen. The 914/6 itself remained as good as unchanged from its launch in 1969 until its end in 1972 with a total of 3,332 built.  The model on show at the ZeitHaus museum is equipped with a 1,991 cc six-cylinder boxer motor delivering 80 kW or 110 bhp for a top speed of 201 km/h. The ex-showroom price at the time was 19,980 DM.
