The Golf is a unique classic, a milestone in automotive history: The first generation Golf – codename A1 – was manufactured by Volkswagen of South Africa up to 2009. An iconic Volkswagen like its predecessor, the Beetle, the Golf marked a milestone in the automobile industry.
Since its market debut in 1974, the Volkswagen Golf has become the world’s most-produced automobile based on an unchanging concept; production in South Africa began in 1978. The “Citi Golf” was launched onto the market in 1984 as an especially affordable Volkswagen based on the Golf I. The “Last Edition” was released in 2009 in a limited series of one thousand. The “Citi Golf” was powered by a 1,595 cc four-cylinder in-line engine delivering 74 kW or 100 hp; its top speed was 180 km/h.
The vehicle on show at the ZeitHaus was the first car in the “Last Edition” series; a total of 377,484 Citi models rolled off the line throughout the car’s production period from 1984 to 2009.
